Toughened Glass

Toughened glass (also commonly known as tempered glass) is up to five times stronger than regular glass. By heating regular glass at high temperatures (650°C) and then rapidly cooling it becomes tougher, and up to 500% more resistant to heat and shock (such as a direct force applied) than ordinary glass.

The aim of the toughening process is to primarily improve the structural durability and thermal strength of the glass, in turn increasing its resilience and ability to withstand heat.

Toughened glass exists so that if the panel fails it will break into small, blunt pieces under pressure, making it much safer than shards of normal glass.

Toughened glass, once processed cannot be cut or machined due to the risk of shattering the glass so it is essential the glass is cut and machined prior.
